Conscious sedation is achieved through the intravenous administration of sedation medication, much like an endoscopy. You will undergo the treatment unaware of the process and completely pain free. Intravenous sedation provides a continually administered and monitored care for all your dental procedures. There are multiple advantages to conscious sedation, some of which are listed here. The procedure:
- Saves time — More procedures can be completed during each visit, reducing your number of appointments.
- Reduces stress — Safe and effective medications, such as versed, fentanyl, and valium, help reduce anxiety.
- Eliminates pain — Conscious sedation provides an alternative for pain-free treatment when novocaine is ineffective.
- Eliminates gagging — The sedation prevents uncomfortable gagging from occurring during your procedure.
Other Options for Sedation
Before your actual treatment begins, we administer the appropriate medications intravenously and continuously monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Additional medications are given as needed throughout your procedure, so there is little chance for pain or discomfort. Additional options for dental sedation include nitrous oxide and oral sedation.- Oral sedation with sleeping pills and other sedative medications and nitrous oxide provides a comfortable experience for those with less apprehension but still want a relaxing experience.
- Hospital dentistry is available for patients with certain medical conditions or developmental disabilities that are best managed in the hospital setting.
- Nitrous oxide is another option that we offer. This option provides sedation for the mildly apprehensive patient. Call

Sedation Options Available at Sun Dental
IV Conscious Sedation
With intravenous sedation, an anti-anxiety medication is administered into a vein. By request, you can be given medication to temporarily numb the skin so you don’t even feel a pinch. IV sedation is the most predictable method of sedation in which a deeper level of sedation is desired. Only reversible sedative medications are administered to our patients to increase safety. Also, anti-nausea medications are given to provide maximum comfort. A profound state of relaxation and amnesia can be achieved with this state of sedation.
Sedation medication will put you into a state of deep relaxation. Most patients do not recall much about their visit about the procedure, simply arriving to the office and soon after are at home relaxing.
Receive Dental Treatment With Conscious Sedation
When you make an appointment at Sun Dental, you can receive conscious sedation as part of your procedure. Before beginning your treatment, we'll give you the appropriate medication through an IV. We'll monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing throughout the treatment to make sure your procedure goes well.
Pain-Free Dentistry
Dental procedures with conscious sedation are completely pain-free, and you will be unaware of the process, much like an endoscopy. The sedation medication is continually administered to reduce any chance of pain or discomfort. Other types of sedation are available, including oral sedation and nitrous oxide.
Get Dental Services With Oral Sedation
Oral Sedation is a safe and convenient approach to an anxiety free dental visit. When you arrive for your treatment you will be given one or more oral sedative pills, which will put you into a relaxed and comfortable state. The medicine is very similar to valium and Xanax but is much more effective.
You will be awake but very drowsy. Many times, we will use this in combination with Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) to maximize you comfort. Your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation) will be monitored throughout the procedure. The time you spend in the dentists’ chair will feel like minutes. There will be little recollection of your dental visit and the procedure will have seemed to pass quickly.

Apprehension of Dental Treatment
It is common and perfectly normal to have some degree of apprehension or anxiety prior to receiving dental treatment. Some people, however, have stronger feelings in this regard than others. These feelings may have been produced by a less than pleasant past experience, stories told by family or friends, or by the nature of the dental procedure itself (wisdom teeth removal).
Dental treatment may be especially frightening to young children and patients with developmental disabilities. Whatever the cause, apprehension or anxiety can produce many unpleasant effects including heart palpitations, high blood pressure, upset stomach, and trouble sleeping the night before the appointment. Many highly apprehensive patients avoid dental care for many years until their problems become so severe that they are forced to seek emergency care.
What Are Sedation and Anesthesia?
Sedation and anesthesia can make practically all dental and oral surgical procedures more pleasant and safer for the apprehensive patient. During the procedure, the anxiety that many people have can be controlled by administering sedative medications (like Valium).
A sedated patient will not only be more relaxed but may also have limited memory of the procedure performed. In some instances, the patient may also receive additional medications which will place the patient deeply asleep in a state of general anesthesia. In either case, local anesthesia (Novocaine) is also administered to block the pain sensations during the procedure and to keep the mouth numb during recovery.
How Is the Medication Administered?
Sedative medications can be administered by breathing (nitrous oxide- laughing gas), orally (in liquid or pill form), or intravenously (IV).
- Nitrous oxide is the most common agent used to treat apprehensive patients and can be used either by itself or in combination with other medications
- Oral medication allows the patient to take a sedative the night before for a restful night's sleep and eliminates the need for an IV. However, oral medication takes time to work and has limits on how sedated you can safely become
- Medication given intravenously (IV) has its effect rapidly, so your dentist can give the precise amount needed for your level of anxiety. In addition, if more medication is needed during the procedure, the IV allows easy administration of additional medications
- General anesthesia is almost always given intravenously (IV). The route selected by your dentist will depend on your current health status, your particular needs. and the doctor's level of training
How Am I Monitored During the Procedure?
Depending on the depth of the sedation or anesthesia being used, as well as your own medical condition, various monitors will be used during your procedure to ensure your safety. These monitors vary from automatic blood pressure cuffs to the use of pulse oximeters, through a light sensor, which measures the oxygen concentration in your blood.
For many patients, an EKG monitor is also used to monitor your heart rhythm. In addition to the monitoring procedures, your doctor along with his / her trained staff will always be with you and will be observing you closely during your treatment.
Is Sedation and Anesthesia Safe?
The use of sedation and anesthesia in dentistry has a commendable record of safety. This is due to the advanced training our doctors have and our commitment to your overall health. It is important to advise your doctor of all medications that you take as well as any changes in your health since your last visit.
In New jersey, a special permit is required to administer sedation and anesthesia. In order to qualify, we have provided evidence of advanced training in sedation and I or anesthesia and have site visits to certify our facility. The ability to handle emergency situations as well as having specific emergency medications and equipment is a mandatory part of the permitting process. Our office goes above and beyond requirements to ensure your safety. We regularly perform emergency scenarios to be as prepared as possible.
